Introducing: The Chametz-Off
What’s chametz?
Leavened bread, delicious dough-y carbs that are off-limits during Pesach. If you have to let it rise, it’s chametz.
What’s the Chametz-Off?
It’s our post-Pesach spin on Paula Vogel’s Bake-Off writing challenge! In a traditional Bake-Off, playwrights are given random “ingredients” (people, places, things, etc) and have 48 hours to create a short play that integrates all of them.
For our Chametz-Off, we’ll be giving your dough a little more time to rise.
We will give eight playwrights two weeks to write a short play (10-15 minutes) that includes the three random ingredients AND integrates or celebrates Jewish culture.
How do I participate?
Participation in the Chametz-Off is by application only. We will give eight playwrights two weeks to write a short play (10-15 minutes) that includes all three ingredients AND integrates or celebrates Jewish culture. The application link is found on this page to the right, and will be open until April 6th at 11:59 PM. We encourage playwrights of all backgrounds to apply.
Selected playwrights will be notified on April 11th. All selected playwrights will receive the “ingredients” on April 21st at the same time. Playwrights will have one private group workshop (a “first proof,” so to speak) halfway through the writing period via Zoom, and the plays will be directed and performed as a staged reading at The Breman Museum & Cultural Center for all to enjoy!
What if I want to act or direct?
Please fill out the linked form to the right to be considered as an actor or director. Directors and cast will have offers between April 27th and May 10th. A low-intensity rehearsal schedule is TBD.
Calling all playwrights, actors, and directors!
